An Addition in Charlotte's Historic District

Our latest custom home addition project in Charlotte's Dilworth Historic District brought a fresh twist to a historic home. An architect's referral connected us to this couple, and our process helped us build the family precisely what it needed.

This remodel respects the home's architectural integrity while addressing the stated goal of upgraded outdoor living and more space overall.

Organization and Space

This vaulted covered porch addition transformed the home’s outdoor living space, giving the homeowners more room to entertain while staying protected from the elements. Our clients wanted a covered porch area with a built-in grill and a small bar to host guests, along with a mudroom addition to keep things organized inside.

Covered Porch Addition with Black Locust Decking

Expanding an existing covered porch comes with challenges like matching finishes, aligning architectural details, and making the new space feel like part of the original home. We achieved this with a porch featuring black locust decking, a naturally rot-resistant and durable material, and four ceiling-mounted Infratech heaters for year-round comfort.

Smooth Transitions

The outdoor kitchen includes a brick grill area with black limestone countertops and a 36-inch stainless steel gas grill with matching stainless steel doors for storage. To stay true to the home’s historic charm, we carefully matched the new brick to the existing structure and designed the new space with details that reflect the original brick fence columns.

We built mudroom cubbies to provide clever storage. The details, however, stole the show. We added a small bar area with custom cabinetry, soapstone countertops, hex mosaic white floor tile with black rosettes, and a KitchenAid under-counter refrigerator.
